This is Why I Don’t Donate to ‘Charities’ especially for Domestic Violence/Abuse
Do you know what these charities are really doing with the public funds and donated monies? Only in the UK, you can see so many charity shops and charities. Here's why:
I recently spoke to people who have had to stay in one of these ‘charity’ refuges/supported accommodation because of domestic abuse/violence. I witnessed things what I thought was an outrage when these accommodations receive public funds from councils £2000 per room/small studio plus an extra ‘service’ charge to residents of £100+ per month.
Firstly, women had to boil water in a kettle then pour into the bath tub as there was never any running hot water. This was told to the ‘worker’ on site and it was never fixed and excuses made, with very bizarre reasons why there was no hot water (turn up volume for audio).
I spoke to other women who have also been in these accommodations and one boiler was so old, it wasn’t even gas but when the engineer stated it should be changed or the pressure also would never be fixed, they disregarded this and said they wouldn’t change anything that isn’t broken. However, the accommodation was also running as an illegal HMO (house in multiple occupation) or these standards would be met.
I didn’t understand how across the board these ‘charities’ were not able to fix all these normal and basic issues of maintenance or provide the care and support which should involve staff that have specialised training/education but they didn’t. These workers were just random women that had been called in and given the title ‘support worker’. Residents have seen workers sit and just watch Netflix on their phones during their schedule hours, seen them post on social media that Christmas dinners donated by Morrisons were given to each individual at the properties but this never happened as well as hearing women being gaslighted that they’re not being funded by places such as the lottery even though it states this in the public search in Companies House online that they are then shouted at to then have to leave when the resident states to them she doesn’t feel safe as window men came in to the property without notification and she had her curtains open in her room. And washing and drying for £6 each time! With some properties with 11 people with only 1 washing machine!
Not only that, she stated she was being pressured to go to the job centre by the workers and she wouldn’t be able to manage that. They should have told her that she can have an easement which is over a few months so she didn’t have to manage this after having suffered from domestic violence and rape BUT THEY NEVER TOLD ANY RESIDENTS THIS as part of their support work roles as below audio.
And when confronted about these charities’ behaviour including from neighbours about incorrect support as they would advise residents to stay in refuge for about 3 months without applying for housing anywhere else as it was the process WHICH IT IS NOT so that they can claim public monies in your name for that time period to have a turnstile of residents in but then persuade you to go back to the perpetrator! The charity will resort to illegal evictions, abuse/gaslighting and harassment with workers locking someone out of the property by putting the key behind the door and pretending to come open the door which would have easily been a 10 second walk down the stairs.
And where is all the money going you’d ask?...TO BUYING NEW PROPERTIES AND LAND
(https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2025/06/charity-refused-access-to-land-after-buying-it/)
These include new offices as below where Morrisons (supermarket) also sent public money to them to refurbish the interiors! oh la la, wouldn’t it be nice to get an extra £20k to refurbish your work office even though you don’t provide the correct qualified and specific support or basic essentials such as clean spaces with hot water to your clients??? :
And new properties for further HMOs or in the case of this ‘foundation’ – a chalet in France where “admission requirements” include being approved by two current members, and paying a £25,000 joining fee followed by annual membership fees of £6,000 (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2023/jan/16/watchdog-investigates-charity-set-up-by-uk-billionaire-jim-ratcliffe-over-16m-ski-clubhouse)
I have also seen reviews of these places from other residents that have been there where they state they were abused and felt more traumatised after going into a refuge/supported accommodation. These date back to almost 6 years go. And behind the refuge/supported accommodation of the below are a company called Regenda, a housing group/association, where several hundreds of people have written online reviews how they’re not fulfilling their duties for their clients/residents.
These are only those that took the time to find the page so if any others have, it is a sincere heartfelt understanding of what you’ve had to go through in a place where they are supposed to be against the topic they advertise.
One worker stated she didn’t care about any concerns such as bringing men into the building to fix a light in the very early morning and didn’t notify any women but instead reported this to other workers as ‘racism’ by stating something along the lines that the resident said blacks are abusive and then managers like one called Cheryl would harass you that you said this by sending you paperwork. Sounds like cases like the Post Office scandal where the management there pretended they didn’t know people were being psychologically and emotionally abused until she stood on the court stand with FAKE CROCODILE TEARS after the ITV programme about this. Then the worker, asks in the audio below, should she go and talk to the man about the concerns of asking not to state names out loud as the residents are to be anonymous in these accommodations and shames the resident about asking questions about support then calls the resident ‘troublesome’ and the worker states she doesn’t care that she is being disrespectful? Good job the full conversation was recorded and CCTV could be mapped to the audio as the psychological abuse was completely demolished and the worker’s fabricated lies cannot be denied here:
I have also seen where they have placed a curfew on times that residents can return which is before 10.30/11pm and that they cannot go outside until 7am as they do not give an access code to enter or leave the building. This is completely outrageous to dictate whether someone can go outside of their own homes as an adult. This was done so that this night shift worker could sleep.
When someone is on a night shift anywhere, you are not being paid to sleep but when someone calls for support, they go to sleep and make out as if it is a burden. I have never heard that being on a night shift means to sleep and being paid WITH CLIENT/RESIDENT AND PUBLIC FUNDS
Here one ‘worker’ says it is nothing to do with the residents if she isn’t in at the scheduled times she is supposed to support and as the resident asks why she wasn’t in from 9am and ‘there are supposed to be support workers to help us’ (below audio) but never showed up until either late in the afternoon, before her shift ended or not at all! She also mentions she doesn’t know if anyone is in because she never even went to see whether there was or not.
Now with the whole cost of living going up, you’d think the councils were utilising taxpayers and public money more appropriately as well as inspecting that it is spread across the communities for ways that are needed. But buying properties with public funds by ‘charities’ instead of providing more homes for people to live in a safe and functioning home with basic necessities such as hot water is highly a misuse of public funds.
There are several people that require peace in their homes and with only £100 out of this £2000 for each room these ‘charities’ receive, which is mainly a deceptive way to call agents running a company for a landlord in this article, going to the rent. We now know where the rest of the money is going and it was not what you thought it was for.
So, these ‘charities’ cannot afford mattresses that are not thin that coils are being felt when sleeping, can’t provide functioning and constant electricity as well as hot water? That real support is not being given when asked for? But fake ‘health & safety’ checks each week including a fire bell or fake ‘support checks’ are done to see if you’re ok when in reality they’re done to see if you’re in the building as there are requirements from the council that people are in these rooms so the ‘charities’ get the funding is harassment when they come to your room/studio any time they feel when no support has been requested especially in the late evenings or when you’re sleeping and have notified them of this prior! One worker made the excuse it was in case you were likely to be suicidal but they had witnessed suicides and even stated they didn’t care wheher someone died or not as in this article from refuges in London run by Hestia: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-66372491
Then I read that these ‘charities’ were saying these accommodations are not being funded enough in another article and that they require further money from the public? No, they do not need it as the excess is being used to purchase properties not for the immediate needs of what it should be utilised for.
I thank the heavens above that I have and never will donate to these ‘charities’ as the behind the scenes is nothing what it is made to make you feel – i.e. that you are doing good. But hey these people like to play on your naiviety.
There must be a way to change this as the funds can be utilised in a way where everyone gets a decent, safe and secure place to live. There should be more education in creating better environments in the homes so that we only experience healthy relationships. And the excess funds for these charities to create safer and more homes for people in the communities not further offices or prison-like accommodation for those that have been through severe trauma and on their journey to heal.
The future will involve people deciding where and how these public funds are being used as taxpayers/public, we can all say no to how it is being spent if it is being misused.
